Clean Power is the first company to earn certification in the United States.
CleanPower, Wisconsin’s largest commercial cleaning contractor, has become the first company in the Nation to earn Green Seal™ certification for its EmeraldSolutions cleaning program based on the program’s reduced toxicity, waste, and exposure. The Green Seal Environmental Standard for Cleaning Services, also known as GS 42, encompasses all indoor activities typically required to clean commercial, public, and industrial buildings and defines an environmentally responsible cleaning service.
CleanPower, headquartered in Milwaukee, will be offering certified green janitorial services through their EmeraldSolutions program. “Green Seal’s certification of our service provides third party verification of our holistic approach to environmentally sensitive maintenance practices,” said Jeffrey Packee, President and COO. “It is not enough to use ‘eco-friendly’ chemicals and equipment, a truly effective green cleaning program encompasses procedures and innovative scheduling in addition to Green Seal-certified products.”
Green Seal is an independent non-profit organization dedicated to safeguarding the environment and transforming the marketplace by promoting the manufacture, purchase, and use of environmentally responsible products and services.
The standard specifies green chemicals, supplies and equipment as well as cleaning procedures and mandates employee training and communication with building owners and occupants. It requires that a building-specific Green Cleaning Plan be implemented. The non-profit organization conducts on-site audits to verify compliance with the standard.

Green building practices and green cleaning of buildings is experiencing phenomenal growth in the United States. Much of this surge toward sustainability has been fueled by environmental standards for green building maintenance and the recognition of sustainable business models among a broad range of professionals – architects, engineers, landscape architects, property managers, interior designers and building maintenance providers.
Green Seal™ developed the standard to provide a market incentive to service providers to offer environmentally responsible cleaning services and a clear, reliable tool for purchasers to determine which services are environmentally responsible. The goal of the standard is to establish a green cleaning program that protects human health and the environment.
“The certification process required a substantial capital investment and large-scale changes in the way we train our employees to provide the service. We are looking forward to providing our EmeraldSolutions service to business leaders in the area, who like us, share a commitment to sustainability,” said Packee.
